Confronting a Silent Epidemic: PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Advances a Healthier, Cleaner, and Empowered Kolaka Through HIV-AIDS and Tuberculosis Awareness Campaign

Kolaka, October 16, 2025 ¡ª As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable development, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Tbk, a leading sustainable nickel producer, has launched a public health awareness initiative in Pomalaa, Southeast Sulawesi. Through its Indonesia Growth Project (IGP) Pomalaa, the company organized a community outreach program focused on the prevention of HIV-AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB), held in Kampung Bajo, Dawi-Dawi Village, Pomalaa District.

This initiative is a key component of the Kolaka Sehat, Bersih, dan Berdaya (Healthy, Clean, and Empowered Kolaka) Program, a collaborative effort between PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ and the Kolaka Regional Government aimed at improving public health and community resilience in the region.

Partnering with the Pomalaa Community Health Center (Puskesmas) and local authorities, the campaign seeks to raise awareness about the risks of infectious diseases in the rapidly developing industrial zone of Pomalaa. As the area experiences increased population mobility due to industrial growth, the need for proactive health education and disease prevention becomes more urgent.

HIV-AIDS and TB remain significant global health concerns. Indonesia ranks among the top 30 countries with the highest TB burden, reporting over one million cases annually, including approximately 24,000 cases among individuals living with HIV. Locally, Kolaka Regency is witnessing a similar upward trend.

According to the 2023 Kolaka Health Profile, 46 new HIV cases were recorded¡ªan increase from 34 the previous year¡ªwith 56.5% occurring among individuals in their most productive years. Men accounted for 80.4% of these cases, and 67% of patients have begun antiretroviral therapy (ARV).

For TB, surveillance data revealed 305 confirmed cases out of 1,514 suspected individuals, with fluctuations influenced by social and environmental factors in the region.

These figures underscore the importance of heightened vigilance and community engagement in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, especially in areas experiencing rapid industrialization.

Dr. Alriani Hamzah, Head of the Pomalaa Community Health Center, emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration in tackling infectious diseases. ¡°As industrial activity brings more people into the region, the risk of disease transmission increases. We deeply appreciate this partnership, which strengthens our efforts to prevent and manage these health challenges more effectively,¡± she said.

Pomalaa District Head, Rachmat Hidayat Gavoer, echoed the sentiment, stressing that HIV-AIDS prevention is a shared responsibility. ¡°The influx of workers from outside the region raises the potential for HIV-AIDS transmission. We commend PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ for taking proactive steps through this awareness campaign. People should not fear seeking treatment¡ªHIV is manageable with consistent care,¡± he affirmed.

From the company¡¯s perspective, Achmad Siswandi Asdam, Project Engineer for PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ IGP Pomalaa, highlighted that community health initiatives are integral to the company¡¯s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework.

¡°The signing of our Memorandum of Understanding with the Kolaka Regional Government marks a pivotal moment in our collaboration with local authorities and communities. We are committed to ensuring that every aspect of our operations contributes positively to environmental sustainability and community well-being,¡± he stated.

He added, ¡°Through health education, medical equipment donations, scholarships for specialist doctors, and certification programs for healthcare workers, we aim to ensure that Kolaka residents have access to quality, sustainable healthcare. These efforts will be extended to all community health centers in Pomalaa.¡±

The campaign also promotes early disease detection and routine health screenings, encouraging residents to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health.

¡°Early detection is key to protecting our communities,¡± Achmad emphasized. ¡°We will continue these efforts as part of our long-term commitment to community empowerment in our operational areas.¡±

This initiative is part of PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s broader strategy to build community health resilience¡ªan essential pillar of sustainable development. The collaboration aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

Under the Kolaka Sehat, Bersih, dan Berdaya Program, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ will implement a series of targeted actions, including:

  • Health education campaigns across villages and schools to prevent HIV-AIDS and TB
  • Capacity-building for healthcare professionals through training and certification
  • Provision of medical equipment to Pomalaa Type D Regional Hospital
  • Scholarships for specialist doctors to strengthen local healthcare human resources
  • Development of community-based early detection systems in collaboration with local health centers

As Pomalaa continues to grow into a key industrial hub in Southeast Sulawesi, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ recognizes that true progress must be accompanied by a healthy, informed, and empowered population.

¡°Through our unwavering commitment to health, environmental stewardship, and community empowerment, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ is dedicated to driving meaningful and sustainable change. Together with local government and communities, we are working to build a healthier, cleaner, and more resilient Kolaka,¡± Achmad Siswandi Asdam concluded.
