Winning 2025 Subroto Award for ¡°Matano Iniaku¡± Program, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Demonstrates Sustainable Mining that Revitalizes Nature and Communities

Jakarta, October 24, 2025 ¡ª As a member of MIND ID and a strategic partner of the Indonesian government in advancing downstream processing and sustainable development in the energy and mineral resources sector, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Tbk (PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½) has once again achieved national recognition.

The company was honored with the 2025 Subroto Award from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in the category of Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) Performance. This prestigious accolade is the highest recognition in the ESDM sector for industry players successfully integrating sustainability into their business practices.

The award was presented by Dr. Ing. Tri Winarno, Director General of Minerals and Coal at the Ministry of ESDM, and received by Budiawansyah, Chief Sustainability & Corporate Affairs Officer of PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½. In his remarks, Minister of ESDM Bahlil Lahadalia emphasized the critical role of sustainability in national energy development:

¡°The ESDM sector is no longer solely about production but about how energy and natural resources can deliver added value, preserve the environment, and enhance community welfare. This is the true essence of sustainability."

Matano Iniaku: From a Remote Village to a National Inspiration

For PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, this award is more than a symbol of achievement; it is a testament to a transformative story from a small village on the shores of Lake Matano in Nuha District, East Luwu Regency. The ¡°Matano Iniaku¡± program was born from a commitment to listen and collaborate with communities, delivering tangible solutions to environmental, economic, and social challenges.

Previously, Matano Village faced limited access to basic needs, such as potable clean water, due to the absence of a distribution network reaching households, despite the area being surrounded by natural clean water sources from Lake Matano and the La Waa River. Additionally, agricultural land had degraded due to unsustainable forest clearing practices.

Through the Matano Iniaku program, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ supported the development of a piped water system, delivering clean water directly to households and ensuring sustainable access to local natural resources. Thanks to a participatory approach, the village has emerged as a locally and nationally recognized model of community empowerment. PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ integrated six pillars of development¡ªnatural, social, individual, intellectual, infrastructure, and cultural capital¡ªdriving systemic change within the community.

Transformative Impact

  • Environmental Restoration: Rehabilitation of a 200-hectare watershed increased the La Waa River¡¯s flow to 0.6 m?/second and reduced emissions by 22,538 tons of CO? equivalent.
  • Economic Growth: Vulnerable groups saw income increases of IDR 1¨C4 million per month through agroforestry, eco-creative centers, and nature-based tourism.
  • Improved Access: Provision of a speedboat ambulance, clean water infrastructure, and telecommunications through BTS tower construction.
  • Strengthened Institutions: Establishment of four local organizations¡ªPokdarwis (tourism group), KWT (women¡¯s farming group), farmer groups, and Redkar (firefighting volunteers)¡ªfostering social cohesion and local leadership.
  • Cultural Preservation: Revitalization of the Padungku and Jaga Air traditions, enhancing community pride and ecological awareness.

With a social investment exceeding IDR 5 billion, the program achieved a Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 1:1.08, proving that small steps can yield significant, lasting impact.

Endra Kusuma, Director of External Relations at PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, stated, ¡°Matano Iniaku is a story of listening. We learned that true change emerges when companies and communities work hand in hand, not in opposition. This Subroto Award belongs to the people of East Luwu who have shown that sustainability is not a concept but an action.

¡±PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s 2025 Subroto Award victory underscores the synergy between industry and government in achieving equitable energy transformation, aligning with President Prabowo¡¯s vision of downstream processing, green economy, and national energy independence.

Budiawansyah added, ¡°It is an honor for PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ to support the government in advancing downstream processing and socio-environmental responsibility. This award strengthens our commitment to low-carbon mining practices, powered by hydroelectricity, and focused on community welfare.¡±

A Legacy of Sustainable Mining

The 2025 Subroto Award marks another milestone in PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s journey toward sustainable mining. Since receiving its first Subroto Award in 2018 for Best Environmental Management, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ has consistently demonstrated its commitment to social and environmental responsibility. Subsequent recognitions include the 2019 award for Mining Environmental Protection, the 2022 award for Most Innovative Community Empowerment Program in Health, and the 2024 and 2025 awards for Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) Performance.

These consecutive achievements reflect not only recognition of innovation but also PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s unwavering commitment to sustainability as an integral part of its operations. From environmental stewardship to community empowerment, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ embeds Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles as the foundation for fostering life¡ªpreserving clear lakes, restoring green lands, and empowering communities to face the future with optimism.
