Our program
The Upstream Dam De-characterization Program covers 30 structures and is scheduled for completion in 2035. De-characterization is a complex technical process, and each structure has its own characteristics and challenges. Therefore, the timeframe for each project is defined based on specific studies, ensuring that all stages are carried out with complete control and safety.

Upstream Dam De-characterization Program

Schedule for Structures Undergoing De-characterization and yet to be De-characterized

Downstream Containment Structures (DSR)
As part of measures to enhance safety during the de-characterization of higher-risk dams, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ built Downstream Containment Structures.
These additional structures are installed downstream of the main dam and are intended to contain tailings and limit the reach of materials in the event of breach. This preventive measure reinforces ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½'s commitment to protecting communities and the environment.

Between 2020 and 2022
We completed the construction of four DSRs in Minas Gerais: one for the Sul Superior Dam, in Gongo Soco; one for the Forquilha I, Forquilha II, Forquilha III and Grupo Dams, located between Ouro Preto and Itabirito; one for the B3/B4 Dam, in Nova Lima; and one for the Minervino and Cord?o Nova dikes, part of the Pontal System, in Itabira.
In 2024
With the completion of the de-characterization of the B3/B4 dam in Nova Lima, the DSR that had been built was removed and the area was reintegrated into the environment.

B3/B4 ¨C A Milestone in Dam De-characterization
The de-characterization of the B3/B4 dam, located at Mina de Mar Azul in Macacos (Nova Lima - MG), represented a historic milestone for ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ and for the safe management of dams in Brazil. In May 2024, the process of de-characterization of the structure was completed - the first dam built using the upstream method, which had been at the maximum emergency level (level 3) to be completely eliminated. The work was carried out using 100% autonomous equipment, operated remotely, guaranteeing zero risk to the operators throughout the entire project.
In total, 3.3 milion cubic meters of tailings were removed in a short timeframe, given the project's complexity.
In addition to eliminating the risk associated with the structure, the project also included actions to repair and revitalize the area and support the local community, reinforcing ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½'s commitment to the individuals' safety and environmental recovery.

In compliance with the De-characterization State of Commitment signed with the main regulatory bodies and the Public Prosecutor's Office, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ makes available monitoring reports on the execution of de-characterization works for its upstream dams.
