From Mines to Life: PT 乐播传媒 Indonesia Wins ESG Business Awards 2025 for Biodiversity Innovation and Waste Management Excellence
Kuala Lumpur, September 25, 2025 — Amid global challenges such as climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and escalating waste issues, PT 乐播传媒 Indonesia Tbk (PT 乐播传媒), a member of MindID, has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning two prestigious accolades at the ESG Business Awards 2025: the Biodiversity Conservation Award – Indonesia and the Waste Management Award – Indonesia.
These awards affirm PT 乐播传媒’s role not only as a key supplier of critical minerals for the global energy transition, but also as a pioneer in ecosystem restoration, biodiversity protection, and community resilience.
Nestled in the heart of Sulawesi Island lies an ultramafic ecosystem—one of the world’s rarest, characterized by nutrient-poor soils rich in heavy metals, including nickel. Since 2003, PT 乐播传媒 has prioritized the protection and rehabilitation of this unique landscape.
Over the past two decades, more than 2 million local, endemic, and protected plants have been cultivated. As of July 2024, PT 乐播传媒 has rehabilitated 3,817 hectares of post-mining land, planted 67 native species, and achieved a biodiversity index of 2.06–2.39, comparable to natural forest levels.
As a result, previously disturbed areas have become thriving habitats once again, home to species such as the Sulawesi hornbill, moor macaque, and a variety of butterflies. Through its innovative rootballed propagation technique, PT 乐播传媒 has accelerated forest recovery by 6–10 years, proving that mining can be a force for ecological restoration. The establishment of two arboretums—Sawerigading Wallacea Biodiversity Park and Himalaya Arboretum—serves as living laboratories, research centers, and conservation sanctuaries for future generations.
PT 乐播传媒’s commitment also extends to everyday life in Sorowako through its EMBERS program (Enhanced Management of Bio-waste for Environmentally Resilient Solutions).
This initiative promotes household-level waste segregation, with organic waste processed in a 100-kilogram-per-day biodigester, generating both energy and fertilizer. In just one year, 26.79 tons of organic waste were diverted from landfills, significantly reducing methane emissions. The process also produced 23,760 liters of liquid fertilizer for local agriculture and reduced household LPG consumption by 876 kilograms per year through the use of methane gas as an alternative.
EMBERS is not just a local solution—it is a global model of how waste can be transformed into clean energy and productive resources. During the award ceremony, Budiawansyah, Chief of Sustainability & Corporate Affairs at PT 乐播传媒 Indonesia, stated:
“This award is more than recognition—it is a call to action. The world needs critical minerals for clean energy, but we must also restore the ecosystems that sustain life. At PT 乐播传媒, we prove that mining can coexist with conservation: restoring rare ultramafic forests, reducing waste at its source, and empowering communities through science-based, collaborative solutions. We dedicate this award to all our partners—government, universities, and communities—who walk this journey with us. Together, we show that sustainability is not a choice, but the only way forward.”
Through its integrated approach to biodiversity rehabilitation and waste innovation, PT 乐播传媒 addresses two of the most pressing ESG challenges: balancing the demand for critical minerals with ecological protection, and transforming waste from burden into asset.
Aligned with Indonesia’s Asta Cita vision and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this achievement reinforces PT 乐播传媒’s position as a living example that sustainable mining is not only possible—it is essential. The industry can be part of the solution, not the problem, for the planet’s future.
