Towuti Water Test Results Released: PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Upholds Transparency and Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Recovery

Sorowako, 16 September 2025 ¡ª From the first day of the oil pipeline leak incident in Lioka Village, Towuti District, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Tbk (PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½) has committed to a comprehensive recovery process guided by the principles of transparency, scientific rigor, and close collaboration with the East Luwu Regency Government, local communities, and key stakeholders.

To date, this commitment has been implemented consistently under the direct supervision of the Regent of East Luwu, Irwan Bachri Syam, including ensuring openness in the engagement of independent expert teams to observe and assess both social and environmental impacts.

Independent testing and analysis were conducted by the Disaster Risk Reduction Center of the University of Indonesia (DRRC UI), as well as the East Luwu Environmental Agency in collaboration with PT Global Environment Laboratory (GEL).

Independent Testing Results

Water Quality

  • Water samples were collected on 30 August 2025 from Lake Towuti, approximately 1 kilometer from the Timampu River estuary.
  • Physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters were tested.
  • Results confirmed that water quality meets Class II standards under Government Regulation No. 22/2021, meaning the water is suitable for recreational use, freshwater aquaculture, livestock, landscape irrigation, and other uses requiring comparable quality standards.

Air Quality

  • Air samples were taken on 30 August 2025 in Molindoe Hamlet, Lioka Village.
  • Measured parameters¡ªSulfur Dioxide (SO?), Ozone (O?), and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO?)¡ªwere all found to be below national ambient air quality thresholds, indicating safe air conditions with no identified health risks.
  • The sampling process was conducted openly and transparently, witnessed by local residents, with clearly recorded time stamps and geographic coordinates. Samples were sealed in accordance with standard protocols and analyzed at certified laboratories.

Professor Fatma Lestari, Chair of DRRC UI, confirmed the credibility and validity of the test results:

¡°The analyses were conducted using strict scientific standards and direct field observations. The results indicate that the water is safe. However, routine monitoring, data transparency, and continued community engagement remain essential. DRRC UI will continue to provide support to ensure environmental management remains aligned with scientific evidence and community expectations.¡±

Budiawansyah, Director and Chief of Sustainability & Corporate Affairs Officer at PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia, emphasized that the positive findings do not diminish the company¡¯s sense of responsibility:

¡°We welcome these test results with gratitude, as they provide reassurance and peace of mind for the community. However, we fully recognize that our work is not finished. PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ remains committed to continuing recovery efforts, improving village infrastructure, delivering assistance aligned with community needs, and maintaining transparency in every step we take. All of this is carried out with care and a strong sense of responsibility.¡±

As of day 22, a total of 206 formal grievances from six affected villages have been verified and addressed, ranging from health services to livelihood assistance. In parallel, the government and PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ have carried out repairs to public infrastructure, including bridge safety railings and irrigation channels, to ensure community activities can resume smoothly and safely.

The Regent of East Luwu, Irwan Bachri Syam, described the test results as both reassuring and a tangible demonstration of transparency:

¡°God willing, the people of Towuti can feel reassured, as the water has been confirmed to be safe. Nevertheless, the government, together with experts and PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, will continue routine monitoring to ensure this assurance is sustained. All actions are being implemented fairly, transparently, and in the best interests of the people of East Luwu.¡±

Following the conclusion of the emergency response phase on 12 September 2025, the local government and PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ have now entered a recovery transition phase, focusing on sustained community assistance, ongoing environmental monitoring with independent experts, and strengthening village infrastructure to enhance resilience to future risks.
