PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s Proactive Approach to Impact Management: From Community Grievances to Environmental Recovery, Progress Continues
Towuti, 9 September 2025 ¡ª As recovery efforts enter day 18 following the oil pipeline leak incident in Towuti District, East Luwu Regency, progress continues to be both measurable and encouraging. PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Tbk¡¯s commitment to swift, transparent, and accountable action is now yielding concrete results, not only in the resolution of community grievances but also in the restoration of environmental conditions.
Recovery efforts are being implemented through a comprehensive and integrated upstream?to?downstream approach. Joint response teams continue intensive inspections along the river system to ensure that no affected areas are overlooked during the cleanup process. This systematic approach is essential to preventing the spread of impacts to more ecologically sensitive zones.
Response measures have also been extended downstream, particularly in lake areas. A series of anticipatory safeguards have been put in place to prevent any oil residue from entering the lake ecosystem. Regular monitoring and inspections are ongoing across all water bodies to maintain environmental integrity and protect the lake from potential contamination.
As of today, 48% of the 190 registered grievances from six affected villages have been fully resolved. This figure provides clear evidence of PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s commitment to addressing each concern responsibly and efficiently.
Grievance handling has been conducted proactively through PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s dedicated Grievance Response Team, which engages directly with residents in their communities. One such case involved Ms. Agustina, a resident of Langkea Raya Village, who raised concerns regarding local water conditions. As an immediate precaution, the team advised her not to consume the water temporarily until official laboratory test results are finalized.
¡°PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s team proactively came to our community. With the presence of this command post, it has become much easier for us to ask questions and communicate our concerns,¡± Ms. Agustina shared.
Beyond grievance resolution, the joint response team has reinforced environmental recovery through a science?based, data?driven approach. Air quality monitoring has been conducted at several locations, based on concerns raised by residents through the Information and Complaint Post.
The monitoring and measurements were carried out by environmental specialist Tri Wisnu Febrianto from HAS Environmental, using an advanced Portable Environmental Quality Monitor (EQM). This equipment enables real?time detection of pollutants, including hazardous gases associated with Marine Fuel Oil (MFO), such as Sulfur Dioxide (SO?) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which can pose respiratory health risks. These assessments represent a proactive safeguard to ensure community air quality remains within safe limits.
By day 18, it has been confirmed that odor complaints in residences located near the river are no longer present, demonstrating the effectiveness of the comprehensive cleanup and remediation measures implemented.
Endra Kusuma, Head of External Relations at PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, expressed appreciation for the strong collaboration among all stakeholders, noting that air quality monitoring results provide reassurance that impacts are being measured accurately and addressed responsibly to restore a sense of safety and normalcy for local residents.
¡°The progress we see today is the result of sustained trust and collaboration. With 48% of reported grievances resolved and odor?related concerns addressed in residential areas, this demonstrates that our integrated approach is structured, coordinated, and on track,¡±
Endra stated.
Guided by government leadership, supported by environmental experts, and strengthened by active community participation, every recovery step has been carried out with care and transparency¡ªensuring Towuti¡¯s environment is restored and that the daily lives of its residents return to safe, stable, and sustainable conditions.
