Machine Learning-Based Slag Furnace Ratio Automation Innovation Earns PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Gold Achievement at OPEXCON 2025

Jakarta, November 13, 2025 ¡ª Indonesia¡¯s nickel industry has reached another milestone in advancing national operational excellence standards. At the Operational Excellence Conference (OPEXCON) 2025, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Tbk (¡°PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡±), a member of MIND ID (Mining Industry Indonesia Holding), received the Gold Achievement Award for its machine learning-based automation solution for controlling the Silica/Magnesia (S/M) ratio in slag furnaces. This innovation is part of PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s ongoing digital transformation journey, which has become a cornerstone of operational performance improvement in recent years.

The award reinforces PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s position as a mining company that successfully integrates operational excellence, safety, and advanced technology to deliver sustainable value. Amid growing global demands for efficiency, production reliability, and sustainability standards, this achievement reflects the company¡¯s long-term commitment to operating world-class nickel facilities that are safe, intelligent, and low-emission.

The award-winning project tackled one of the long-standing challenges in nickel smelting: instability in the Silica/Magnesia (S/M) ratio within slag furnaces, which often led to suboptimal slag flow and reduced output. By deploying machine learning technology directly integrated with field control systems, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ improved S/M compliance from an average of 89% to 95%, eliminating the need for 24/7 manual adjustments that previously burdened engineers and operators. This innovation not only enhanced process reliability but also delivered significant productivity gains, with potential recovery of approximately 182 tons of nickel per year, while drastically reducing operational risks.

The initiative was executed by the cross-functional project team ¡°Slag Aman Tidur Nyenyak¡±, led by Ikra Setya Utama and supported by team members Yuda Kusumah, Mawaz Rindra Dihari, Amelia Welirangan, Ruti Pusakawati, Syahril Yusuf, and Fitrian Oddang. Their collaboration integrated process analysis, automation, laboratory testing, and quality assurance into a comprehensive system.

Bernardus Irmanto, President Director and CEO of PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia, stated: ¡°This recognition demonstrates that operational excellence is not just a concept for us¡ªit is embedded in every aspect of our work. By combining process discipline, safety, and artificial intelligence, we prove that Indonesia¡¯s mining industry can lead global innovation. This achievement shows that digital transformation, when driven by clear purpose, delivers tangible benefits for the company, the environment, and society.¡±

The project leveraged real-time data integration, neural networks, XRF laboratory analysis, and PLC control systems to create an automation platform capable of making autonomous decisions on conveyor speeds for West Block (WB) and East Block (EB), ensuring optimal slag ratio. This approach eliminated delays of 30¨C150 minutes, reduced repetitive tasks, and minimized operator fatigue.

As the world¡¯s largest holder of nickel reserves, Indonesia¡¯s ability to enhance production efficiency and reliability is critical to its role in global supply chains for strategic minerals. Amid the global energy transition and rising demand for nickel in electric vehicles, batteries, and clean energy infrastructure, innovations like PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s strengthen Indonesia¡¯s position as a trusted and responsible supplier.

Zainuddin, Head of Operational Excellence at PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, added: ¡°This achievement reflects the maturity of ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s continuous improvement culture. It¡¯s not just about boosting production¡ªit¡¯s about creating safer, more efficient, and future-ready processes. By integrating machine learning, we are solving technical challenges while reinforcing the company¡¯s long-term sustainability foundation.¡±

The slag furnace automation initiative aligns with PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s agenda to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. Enhanced furnace stability and reduced process variability could cut emissions by up to 6,000 tons of CO?eq annually, equivalent to the absorption capacity of more than 250,000 trees. The technology is now being expanded to other operational areas, including sulfur and coal management, marking a new phase of smart automation across PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s production chain.

Under MIND ID¡¯s leadership, this Gold Achievement underscores the role of state-owned enterprises and strategic partners in driving Indonesia¡¯s mining transformation toward modern, safe, and responsible operations. In an era of global industry dynamics and increasing transparency demands, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ demonstrates that growth, sustainability, and technology can coexist¡ªand even reinforce one another.

¡°This Gold Achievement is not the finish line, but the foundation for the next stage of transformation,¡± Zainuddin concluded. ¡°We will continue to strengthen operational discipline, harness technology, and ensure every improvement benefits the nation, society, and future generations.¡±
