Setting a Global Benchmark for Responsible Mining, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Wins Gold at Asia ESG Positive Impact Awards 2025 for ¡°Biodiversity Conservation¡±

Sorowako, November 11, 2025 ¡ª PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Tbk (¡°PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡± or ¡°the Company¡±), a member of MIND ID and a strategic partner to the Indonesian government in advancing downstream development and sustainable practices in the energy and mineral resources sector, has achieved another international milestone. The Company was honored with the Gold Award in the Biodiversity Conservation category at the Asia ESG Positive Impact Awards 2025 (PIA 2025) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

This prestigious recognition was awarded for PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s flagship initiative, ¡°Kehati Lutim Bersinergi¡±, which has been acknowledged as a national model for science-based biodiversity conservation and multi-stakeholder collaboration within mining areas.

Asia ESG Positive Impact Awards: Driving Regional Sustainability Leadership
The Asia ESG Positive Impact Awards celebrate organizations across Asia that deliver tangible environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impact. This year, Indonesian companies stood out prominently¡ªamong them PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia, which previously received the Lestari Awards 2025 from KG Media for the same program. PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s presence on the regional stage underscores growing international recognition of Indonesia¡¯s leadership in sustainable practices.

¡°This award is more than a trophy¡ªit¡¯s a call to action. The world needs responsible mining and thriving ecosystems,¡± said Budiawansyah, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer at PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia.

¡°Kehati Lutim Bersinergi¡±: From Degraded Ecosystems to a National Conservation Model
Launched in East Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi, Kehati Lutim Bersinergi is an integrated biodiversity conservation program designed to restore post-mining ecosystems while enhancing community well-being through nature-based solutions.

The program brings together local government, academia, farmer cooperatives, and local communities to restore ecological functions and balance mining activities with conservation efforts.

Key focus areas include:

  • Reforestation of post-mining land using endemic Sulawesi species such as Dillenia serrata (Dengen), Diospyros celebica (Ebony), and Kjelbergiodendron celebicum (Tembeuwa).
  • Wildlife and endemic species conservation, including Rusa Timorensis and the butterfly Cethosia myrina through the innovative KOKKUBI (Butterfly Conservation Program).
  • Watershed rehabilitation across ¡À10,000 hectares in 13 districts beyond the mining concession to strengthen water resilience and reduce erosion.
  • Community empowerment through training, job creation, and endemic plant nurseries.

The program has evolved through phases¡ªbaseline research (2017¨C2019), design and innovation testing (2020), and full-scale implementation with continuous monitoring (2021¨Cpresent).

Innovation and Measurable Impact
Kehati Lutim Bersinergi introduces breakthrough methods in Indonesia¡¯s mining sector:

Rootballed Planting for Accelerated Rehabilitation
Seedlings are planted with their original soil (rootball) to preserve natural microorganisms, speeding ecosystem recovery by 3¨C4 years.
KOKKUBI (Butterfly Habitat Engineering)
Ecological design combining host and nectar plants to create natural microhabitats for Cethosia myrina butterflies.

Impact highlights:

  • Over 4 million trees planted and 10,000 hectares of degraded land restored.
  • Biodiversity indices improved significantly: Shannon-Wiener Index for flora reached 3.0, fauna 2.85¡ªindicators of a healthy, stable ecosystem.
  • Successful breeding of 55 Timor deer (Rusa Timorensis) since 2008, with several released back into the wild.

Collaborative Synergy and Sustainable Leadership
The program¡¯s success stems from cross-functional commitment and enduring partnerships. Local government and forestry agencies provide regulatory support, while Hasanuddin University contributes scientific research and monitoring. Farmer cooperatives such as KSU Mitra Masyarakat Alam (MMA) lead reforestation and nursery operations, engaging over 300 local residents as active conservation stewards.
¡°Sustainability cannot be achieved in isolation,¡± Budiawansyah emphasized. ¡°This program proves that synergy between science, policy, and community is key to protecting the planet without compromising development.¡±

From East Luwu to the World
The success of Kehati Lutim Bersinergi has earned PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia dual environmental accolades in 2025¡ªnationally through the Lestari Awards and regionally via the Asia ESG Positive Impact Awards. These recognitions affirm PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s role as a pioneer in sustainable mining that safeguards both nature and humanity, demonstrating that community-driven conservation innovation from East Luwu can inspire global change.
