Commitment to Towuti¡¯s Environment and Community: PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Affirms Water Safety and Measured Recovery Progress

Towuti, October 25, 2025 ¡ª In upholding its commitment to social and environmental responsibility, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Tbk (PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½), part of the Mining Industry (MindID) group, continues post-incident recovery efforts following an oil pipeline leak with an open, scientific, and collaborative approach. The company¡¯s main focus is to ensure water quality in the surrounding area remains safe, and that recovery is carried out in a measurable, transparent, and publicly auditable manner.

As part of its transparency principles, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ is collaborating with the East Luwu Government and engaging various independent experts, including a team from the Disaster Risk Reduction Centre (DRRC) of Universitas Indonesia (UI), to conduct regular water quality testing in affected areas. DRRC UI is an independent research institution under Universitas Indonesia with a credible reputation nationally and internationally in disaster risk management, environmental studies, and community resilience. The institution also serves as a technical partner to various ministries and global agencies, including BNPB, KLHK, and UNDP, in science-based research and mitigation.

The latest test results from water samples taken on October 5, 2025, show that all key parameters are below the government¡¯s quality standards, and water in the Towuti area is declared safe for daily use, including agriculture, gardening, bathing, washing, and consumption after cooking or treatment.

¡°We understand public concerns about the environmental conditions in Towuti. That¡¯s why from the beginning we involved independent research institutions to ensure every recovery step is based on strong and objective scientific foundations, with processes and results that can be jointly verified by government and academic institutions,¡± said Endra Kusuma, Head of External Relations at PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Tbk.

In addition to water quality testing, DRRC UI also conducted flow distribution analysis and risk mapping within a 9 km radius from the pipeline location. Preliminary results show no indication of oil spreading toward the Towuti Lake conservation area, and hydrocarbon, TPH, and heavy metal parameters remain within ecologically safe limits.

Since the incident was detected on August 23, 2025, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ immediately halted the oil flow and formed an Emergency Response Group (ERG) with DLH, BPBD, East Luwu Regency Government, and local communities. More than 150 field personnel and local volunteers were deployed to isolate the area, clean up, and carry out recovery using environmentally friendly procedures.

The mitigation steps included:

  • Installation of oil booms, skimmers, and absorbent pads along the main water flow path;
  • Oil suction and manual/mechanical cleaning at identified points;
  • Application of bio-remediation using natural materials approved by DLH;
  • Provision of 160,000 liters of clean water per day for affected communities during the emergency response phase;
  • Community health support through the East Luwu Health Office;
  • Outreach with agricultural extension workers and villagers to ensure land and irrigation water safety.

All these actions were documented and reported regularly to local and national regulators.

Recovery Progress at 11 Locations

Out of 11 recovery sites, as of October 22, 2025, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ has completed all locations with water clarity restored. All sites are now undergoing further testing and monitoring of water and soil quality by agronomy experts from IPB University.

Field conditions show significant signs of recovery. ¡°I passed the bridge at Site 2, and the water is very clear now. Many residents are already using it for washing and daily activities,¡± said Aroyos, a resident of Lioka Village who crosses the area daily.

For PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, environmental recovery must go hand in hand with social recovery and rebuilding community trust. The company has established a Grievance and Public Consultation Post in Towuti to accommodate residents¡¯ questions and aspirations directly. Additionally, compensation mechanisms and impact handling costs are being arranged with the East Luwu Regency Government, Forkopimda, and village governments, based on measurable and auditable field verification.

PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ has also launched a community economic recovery program, involving affected residents in labor-intensive projects and sustainable agriculture training, aiming for Towuti to recover not only ecologically but also economically. ¡°All our efforts and commitments focus on ensuring this recovery heals nature and restores the lives of Towuti¡¯s people,¡± Endra added.

As part of responsible governance, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ has:

  • Submitted all environmental monitoring reports to KLHK and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources;
  • Held weekly coordination meetings with East Luwu Regency Government and Forkopimda;
  • Engaged accredited independent laboratories for all water, sediment, and soil testing;
  • Opened audit and field visit access to civil society organizations and media;
  • Implemented a transparent reporting system accessible to relevant stakeholders.

This initiative strengthens the company¡¯s commitment to public accountability and sustainable recovery.

The recovery of Towuti is a long-term process that requires synergy between science, empathy, and collaboration. PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ is committed to continuing testing, rehabilitation, and open communication with all parties, including government, academia, and local communities.

¡°We believe Towuti¡¯s recovery must be a collective movement. With data transparency and a spirit of collaboration, we can make Towuti a strong recovery example, not a weakening controversy,¡± Endra concluded.
