Building a Culture of Early Preparedness: PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, Local Disaster Agency, and Partners Expand Disaster Readiness Education for Primary School Students in Morowali

Morowali, 4 February 2026 ¡ª Morowali Regency in Central Sulawesi is strengthening efforts to raise a generation that is more risk-aware and better prepared to respond to disasters. Through a cross-sector collaboration, PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Indonesia Tbk (PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½)¡ªa member of Indonesia¡¯s state-owned mining holding MIND ID¡ªworked with the Morowali Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and partner company PT Petrosea Tbk to deliver a disaster preparedness outreach programme for primary school students.

The programme ran for three days (3¨C5 February 2026) under the theme ¡°Prepared Together, Safer Together: Disaster-Resilient Schoolchildren.¡± Sessions were held at primary schools located in PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s assisted villages within the IGP Morowali area, including SDN Dampala, SDN Siumbatu, SDN Onepute Jaya 1 and 2, and SDN Bahomotefe 1 and 2.

Organisers identified primary school students as a key audience for embedding disaster awareness over the long term¡ªboth at school and at home. Throughout the programme, students received age-appropriate instruction on local hazard risks, basic mitigation measures, and what to do safely during emergencies. The content was designed to be interactive and easy to understand, helping children translate lessons into practical actions.

Given Central Sulawesi¡¯s exposure to seismic activity, earthquake preparedness was a central focus. Beyond classroom-style explanations, the sessions included practical drills and simulations so students could experience what appropriate response looks like in real time. This hands-on approach helped students learn safe behaviour at school and at home, including how to recognise signs of an earthquake, follow evacuation procedures, and practise the internationally recognised technique ¡°drop, cover, and hold on.¡±

¡°Children are a vulnerable group, but they also have strong potential to become agents of change,¡± said Mohammad Ridwan Mangkali, Head of Prevention and Preparedness at BPBD Morowali. ¡°With the right understanding and training, they can not only protect themselves, but also support people around them.¡± He also welcomed the cross-sector partnership, noting that disaster education from an early age is a long-term investment in building community resilience.

Schools reported immediate benefits from the initiative. Serno, Principal of SDN Siumbatu, said the programme had a positive impact on both students and teachers. ¡°Thank you for organising this activity. The children were very engaged and now have a better understanding of how to respond during a disaster. They also seem more confident,¡± he said. ¡°We hope this knowledge stays with them and becomes part of their daily habits, and that similar activities can continue in the future.¡±

The outreach is part of PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s broader commitment to strengthening safety, resilience, and sustainability in communities around its operational areas. ¡°Safety is a fundamental value we consistently uphold,¡± said Salwa, Community Development Officer for Bahodopi, speaking on behalf of PT ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½¡¯s management. ¡°Through early disaster education and practical training, we aim to equip children with basic knowledge, mental readiness, and the confidence to act appropriately in emergencies. This collaboration reflects our shared belief that disaster preparedness is a collective responsibility¡ªgovernment, business, and communities working together.¡±

Through this programme, students are expected not only to understand disaster risks, but also to apply mitigation steps in everyday life. The collaboration between local government, the private sector, and schools represents a practical step towards building a culture of preparedness from an early age¡ªsupporting a more resilient Morowali in the years ahead.
