Public Hearing ¨C Baixo Jo?o Pereira Dam
ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ will hold a public hearing at 7 PM on May 7 in Congonhas to present the reconformation project for the Baixo Jo?o Pereira dam, located at the F¨¢brica mine, within the Paraopeba Complex. The meeting will take place at the Escola Municipal Senhor Odorico Martinho da Silva school, in the Pires neighborhood, and the company will offer free transportation to the community.
The public hearing is an open space for listening and social participation. During the event, project details and environmental studies will be presented, along with clarification of questions and recording of suggestions and statements from participants. The event is part of the formal steps of the environmental licensing process, currently under review by the state environmental authority.
The Baixo Jo?o Pereira dam underwent a readjustment process to comply with the National Dam Safety Policy. Previously built using the upstream method ¡ª now prohibited by law ¡ª the structure was reconformed in 2024 to the single-stage method, which offers greater stability and safety. The dam retained its sediment containment function, essential for the environmental protection of the region.
"This structure retains sediments from the operation and prevents material from being carried into nature. The readjustment, with new engineering and without the risks associated with the old model, contributes to the responsible continuation of F¨¢brica mine's activities and reinforces our commitment to the safety and sustainability of our operation in Congonhas," says Eder Leite, director of ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½'s Paraopeba Complex.
Following the change in the structure's construction method, the area was revegetated and integrated into the landscape. The current dam is in compliance with environmental and safety legislation, with more efficient sediment control mechanisms, ensuring greater environmental protection.
Last year, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½'s operations in Minas Gerais generated approximately BRL 3.5 billion in taxes and levies, including CFEM, ICMS, TRFM, and ISS. In Congonhas, the F¨¢brica mine operation collected more than BRL 33.4 million in Financial Compensation for Mineral Resource Exploitation (CFEM) and approximately BRL 16.5 million in Service Tax (ISS) for the municipality in 2025.
