Vargem Grande Dam, in Nova Lima (MG), has emergency level ended

The Vargem Grande dam, in Nova Lima, had the emergency level terminated by the National Mining Agency (ANM), last Tuesday, December 16. The structure was at level 1 and has now received the positive Stability Condition Statement (DCE), the technical document that attests to the safety of the structure. Since 2022, 22 of ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½'s structures have left the emergency level.

The removal of the level in Vargem Grande occurred due to the improvement of the stability conditions resulting from the advance of the decharacterization process of the dam, with the removal of part of the tailings from the reservoir, which made it possible to improve the safety factors of the structure, meeting the requirements required by the standards and legislation.
Another important point was the carrying out of geological-geotechnical investigations, which allowed a better definition of the resistance parameters of the materials, in addition to the conclusion of a specific seismic study for the Vargem Grande Dam, which enabled a better measurement of the vibration parameters in the structure.

Decharacterization Program
The Vargem Grande Dam is one of the upstream structures that are being decharacterized by ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ as part of the company's Decharacterization Program. Since 2019, the works of 19 of the 30 planned structures have been completed, which is equivalent to 63% of the total. In 2025, the works of the Campo Grande dam, in Mariana (MG) and Grupo, in Ouro Preto (MG) were completed. More than R$ 12.7 billion have already been invested in the program.

Another important achievement in 2025 was the reduction of the emergency level of the Forquilha III dam, in Ouro Preto (MG), from Level 3 to Level 2. As a result, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ has no structures at the maximum emergency level.

Other important achievements in 2025 included the removal of the emergency status of the Doutor dam, in Ouro Preto; Dic?o Leste, in Catas Altas; Dam 6 and Dike B, in Nova Lima (MG). At the Xingu dam, in Mariana, decharacterization works were initiated and the emergency level was reduced from Level 2 to Level 1.
